Silver vs White Gold: How to Tell the Difference

At first glance, silver and white gold look almost identical. Both are light grey in colour and give a cool, modern appearance. But the difference is bigger than you might think.

What is silver?

Silver jewellery is made from sterling silver, an alloy of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. You can recognise it by the “925” hallmark. Silver is more affordable than gold, but it oxidises over time and darkens in colour. Regular polishing keeps it looking its best.

What is white gold?

White gold is gold mixed with white metals such as palladium. It has a richer and more durable character than silver. White gold carries the hallmark “750” (18k) or “585” (14k). It is heavier, more precious, and holds its colour far better than silver.

How do you tell the difference?

• Check the hallmark: “925” = silver, “750” or “585” = white gold
• White gold is heavier than silver at the same volume
• Silver discolours faster and needs regular maintenance
• White gold is more expensive, but lasts much longer

Which should you choose?

For daily wear and longevity, I always recommend white gold. Silver is great for fashion jewellery or if you have a tighter budget.
