Not every gemstone is equally suited for daily wear. Some stones are incredibly hard and virtually indestructible; others are beautiful but fragile. If you want a piece of jewellery that lasts a lifetime, the choice of stone is crucial.

The Mohs scale

The hardness of gemstones is measured on the Mohs scale, from 1 (soft) to 10 (hardest). The higher the number, the better the stone resists everyday scratching.

The hardest gemstones for daily wear

Diamond (10/10) is the hardest natural substance on earth. Virtually indestructible and ideal for an engagement or wedding ring worn every day.

Sapphire and ruby (9/10) are slightly softer than diamond but still exceptionally durable. Excellent for daily use.

Emerald (7.5 to 8/10) is hard enough, but natural inclusions make it more sensitive to impact. Wear emerald with a little extra care.

My advice

For an engagement or wedding ring, always choose a stone with a hardness of at least 7.5. For occasional jewellery, you can experiment with softer stones.
