When you buy white gold at a classical jeweller, there is a good chance it has been coated with rhodium. Rhodium is a silver-like metal applied over the white gold, making the colour brighter and cooler. The result: that characteristic sleek silver shine most people associate with white gold.

But that is not the only option.

What is the natural colour of white gold?

White gold itself, without a rhodium layer, has a warmer, slightly creamier tone. It is less cold and stark than rhodium-plated white gold, but has a subtle, soft appearance that is very elegant. It sits somewhere between white gold and champagne gold.

Personally, I am a fan of that natural colour. It is honest, refined, and timeless.

What is the downside of rhodium?

Rhodium itself is not bad, but it does wear down over time. Especially with rings worn daily, after a few years you can see the original white gold colour showing through the layer. Many people then have it rhodium-plated again.

With uncoated white gold, you don’t have that. The colour stays as it is, always consistent and requiring no maintenance.
