Rose Gold, Yellow Gold or White Gold: What’s the Difference and Which Suits You?

Three colours of gold, one question: which one do I choose? It is one of the most common questions in my studio. The good news: there is no wrong answer. But there is one that suits you best.

What determines the colour of gold?

Pure gold is always yellow. The colour of a piece of jewellery is determined by the metals added to it in the alloy.

Yellow gold

The classic choice. Yellow gold is mixed with silver and copper, creating that warm, rich golden colour. It is timeless, suits all skin tones, and never goes out of style. Ideal for those who love a classic or vintage look.

White gold

White gold is created by mixing gold with white metals such as palladium. At classical jewellers, it is then often coated with rhodium, a silver-like metal that gives it a cool, sleek finish. Personally, I prefer the natural colour of white gold, which has a slightly warmer and softer appearance than a rhodium layer. White gold looks modern and minimalist and makes diamonds stand out beautifully.

Rose gold

Rose gold is the romantic option. The pink tint comes from adding more copper to the alloy. It is warm, feminine, and modern at the same time. Rose gold has grown enormously in popularity over recent years, and rightly so, as it looks stunning on all skin tones.

Champagne gold

Champagne gold is less well known, but incredibly beautiful. The colour sits somewhere between yellow gold and white gold: warm, soft, and very natural against the skin. It has the glow of yellow gold, but subtler and more understated. For those who want something unique without being too bold, champagne gold is an absolute must.

Can you mix them?

Absolutely. Two- or three-tone pieces combining yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold are beautiful and very popular. Mixing with other jewellery on your hand or wrist is also fine — it doesn’t need to match perfectly.

My advice

Choose the gold you find beautiful and that you want to wear every day. Don’t be led by trends. A good piece of jewellery is worn for a lifetime.
