Synthetic gemstones have been gaining popularity in recent years. But what exactly are they? And are they “fake”? The answer is more nuanced than you might think.

What is a natural gemstone?

A natural gemstone is formed in the earth over millions of years, under extreme pressure and heat. Every stone is unique and has small imperfections known as inclusions. It is precisely that uniqueness that makes a natural stone valuable and special.

What is a synthetic gemstone?

A synthetic or lab-grown gemstone has exactly the same chemical composition and crystal structure as a natural stone, but is grown in a laboratory. They are not imitations or glass stones: they are real gemstones, just made by humans rather than nature.

What are the differences?

What is an imitation stone?

An imitation stone is something entirely different: it is glass, plastic, or another material that resembles a gemstone but has no chemical relation to it. Think of crystal or cubic zirconia as a diamond imitation.

Which should you choose?

It depends on what matters to you: the romance of a stone formed over millions of years underground, or a conscious choice for an affordable and more traceable option. Both are valid.

At my studio in Oud-Heverlee I am happy to discuss the options with you.
