Opal is one of the most enchanting gemstones in the world. Its play of colour, known as “opalescence,” is unique: a single stone reflects red, blue, green, and gold simultaneously, depending on the light. But opal is also one of the most fragile stones in existence. Here is everything you need to know.

Why is opal so special?

Opal consists of 3 to 20% water, which gives it its unique play of colour. No two opals are the same. The finest specimens come from Australia and are rare and precious.

Why must you be careful with opal?

It is precisely that water content that makes opal vulnerable:

• Opal is heat-sensitive: sudden temperature changes can cause it to crack
• Dry environments can cause opal to shrink and crack
• Knocks and drops are dangerous: opal is relatively soft (5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale)
• Chemicals, cleaning products, and perfume can damage the stone

How do you care for opal?

• Clean only with a soft, damp cloth
• Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner
• Store opal in a soft cloth, not in a dry environment
• Put opal on last, after perfume and hairspray

Who is opal for?

Opal is perfect for occasional jewellery worn with care. For a daily ring, a harder stone is a better choice. But as a special piece for memorable moments, opal is incomparably beautiful.
