How to Tell If Jewellery Is Real Gold or Silver

Not every gleaming yellow piece of jewellery is gold, and not every silver piece is sterling silver. But how can you tell the difference? Here are the most reliable ways to recognise genuine metals.

Look for hallmarks

The most reliable method. In Belgium, jewellers are legally required to stamp the metal content:

• Gold: 375 (9k), 585 (14k), 750 (18k)
• Silver: 925 (sterling silver)
• Platinum: 850, 900, 950

No hallmark? Be careful. It may be gold-plated or imitation.

The magnet test

Real gold and silver are not magnetic. Hold a magnet near the piece. Does it attract? Then there is likely iron or steel in the alloy.

Discolouration

Gold-plated jewellery discolours over time on the areas that wear most: the inside of a ring, the clasp of a necklace. Can you see a different coloured metal showing through? Then it is not solid.

The acid test

Jewellers sometimes use an acid test to determine gold content. Bring the piece to a specialist if you are unsure.
