Book a meeting

When you start looking for a new piece of jewellery, you quickly encounter two worlds: the wide range of large chains and webshops, and the smaller, more personal offer of artisan goldsmiths. But what actually makes these two so different? And what are you really buying when you choose one over the other?

Production: atelier vs. factory

Commercial jewellery is produced in large quantities in factories, often using automated machines. That process is efficient and results in an affordable price.

A handmade piece of jewellery comes to life differently. In my atelier in Oud-Heverlee, every piece is made individually. From developing the design to setting a stone: every step is done by hand, with care and craftsmanship. That takes time, but the result is also something quite different.

Unique vs. thousands of copies

A commercial piece of jewellery exists in thousands of identical copies. That is precisely the point: recognisability and availability. For a trend-driven piece or a first piece of jewellery, that certainly has its advantages.

With handmade jewellery, it is different. Every piece I make is unique, whether it is a ring from my permanent collection or a fully personalised piece. Even when I make the same design twice, there are always small differences, because every hand operation turns out slightly differently. That is not a flaw, that is character.

Materials and finish

When making handmade jewellery, I consciously choose which metal and which stones I use. I work with solid gold, silver and recycled metals where possible. I know the origin of my materials, and that gives me the confidence to offer them to you with pride.

Commercial jewellery sometimes contains alloys that are less durable, or surface treatments that come loose over time. That is not always the case, but it is something to keep in mind if you want a piece that lasts for decades. A good rule of thumb: always ask about the hallmark and the metal composition.

Sustainability: an investment or a disposable item?

I see handmade jewellery as heirlooms in the making. Pieces you pass on to your children or grandchildren, that carry stories and become more beautiful over the years in the eyes of those who wear them.

That requires quality materials and skilled craftsmanship. A soldering joint that holds, a clasp that stays smooth for decades, a stone that is safely set. These are details I never rush. And if something ever needs to be repaired, I can do it myself, because I made it myself.

Story and meaning

Perhaps this is the biggest difference of all. When you buy a piece of jewellery from me, whether it is an engagement ring, a pendant or a pair of earrings, you have a story. You know who made it, where it was made, what choices were made and why.

That story makes a piece of jewellery more than an accessory. It makes it a memory, a symbol, a moment you carry with you. Commercial jewellery can also be emotionally meaningful, but the extra layer of craftsmanship, of the human hand that shaped every detail, is always present in a handmade piece.

What suits you?

I am not writing this to convince you that commercial jewellery is bad. I am writing this because I believe that, once you know the differences, you can better choose what suits you.

If you are ever curious about what is possible, a personal piece, an adaptation of something existing, or simply a conversation about what you are looking for, I am here. In my atelier in Oud-Heverlee, just a stone’s throw from Leuven.

Feel free to get in touch or come by. I would love to tell you more about what I can make for you.
