What Is the Difference Between an Engagement Ring and a Wedding Ring?

Many people use the terms “engagement ring” and “wedding ring” interchangeably. But they are not the same. They carry different meanings, mark different moments, and often have different designs. Here is everything explained.

The engagement ring

The engagement ring is given at the moment of the proposal. It is the symbol of the promise to marry. Traditionally it features a stone, often a diamond, but increasingly also a coloured gemstone. In Belgium, the engagement ring is worn on the ring finger of the right hand.

The wedding ring

The wedding ring is exchanged during the marriage ceremony. It is often a simpler ring, sometimes without a stone, symbolising the eternal bond. In Belgium, the wedding ring is worn on the ring finger of the left hand.

Do you wear both at the same time?

That is very personal. Some people wear both rings on the same finger. Others wear the wedding ring on the left hand and the engagement ring on the right. There is no fixed rule.

Do they need to match?

Not necessarily, but it is beautiful when they form a whole. Many couples choose rings that complement each other in style, metal, or finish.
