What to Do When Your Jewellery Breaks or Gets Damaged

It happens to everyone: a small ring that snaps, a necklace that breaks, a stone that comes loose. Don’t panic. Most damage to jewellery can be repaired well, especially if you act quickly.

Keep all the pieces

Has your jewellery broken? Keep all the pieces, including small fragments. A goldsmith can repair a great deal if all parts are present.

Common damage and solutions

Broken clasp: a classic. Clasps can be quickly replaced or repaired.

Loose stone: bring the piece in as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the greater the risk of losing the stone.

Broken link in a chain: in most cases easily repaired by soldering the link.

Bent ring: a goldsmith can resize and reshape a ring.

Scratches or dull surface: a ring or necklace can be polished for a fresh appearance.

What should you avoid?

• Do not try to glue or bend the jewellery yourself
• Do not continue wearing damaged jewellery: it makes things worse
• Do not wait too long: small damage becomes big damage if left untreated
