A Day in the Studio: How a Piece of Jewellery Is Made from Sketch to Finish

How is a piece of jewellery actually made? Many people wonder what happens behind the scenes in a jewellery studio. From the first idea to the gleaming finish: here I take you through a day in my studio.

The conversation and the idea

Every piece of jewellery begins with a conversation. What do you want? Which shape, which metal, which stone? Do you have an inspiration image, or are you starting from scratch? I listen, ask questions, and start sketching.

The sketch and the design

Based on the conversation I make a sketch on paper. That sketch is refined until it is exactly right. Sometimes I also make a digital model, so you get an even clearer picture of the final result.

The production

Then the real work begins. Depending on the design, I melt gold, roll it out, file it, solder it, and build the ring, necklace, or earring step by step. Every detail is done by hand.

Setting the stone

If a gemstone is part of the piece, setting it is one of the most delicate steps. The stone must fit perfectly in the setting and sit firmly, while also catching the light optimally.

The finishing

Polish, inspect, polish again. The piece is examined from every angle and tested before it leaves my studio. Only when it is perfect is it ready.
